Die Republikein (The Republican) is an Afrikaans-language newspaper published daily in Namibia and the second largest newspaper in terms of print circulation [2]. Current Editor in Chief is Chris Jacobie.[3]
Contents |
It was founded in December 1977 by the Republican Party of Namibia with the first editor being Johannes Petrus Spies.[4] The paper was later supported by the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance, a merger of several parties. In 1991, Die Republikein was bought by the Democratic Media Holdings. After several disputes between DTA and DMH during the 1990s, the media house broke with the DTA in 1997 and aspires to increase editorial independence since.[1]
Die Republikein offers an online edition of the newspaper, which mainly reflected the contents of the print version, but is complemented with additional contents such as video material.[2] In August 2011, Die Republikein Online had around 65.000 unique page visitis [5]
Die Republikein targets mainly the Afrikaans-speaking population in Namibia, including those who use the former offcial language as second language. As a pragmatic way to save recources and due to the multilingual situation, the newspaper has started to also publish English language news, especially when it comes to economic as well as African and international news.
